Bangladesh    CASE STUDY #3

Read the following background information. Decide what you would do in the situation. Then select one of the options given.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

Bangladesh is one of the world's poorest and least developed countries. The poor, about 60% of the population, have little access to agricultural land, preventive and curative health services and financial assets. As a wealthy and powerful upper-class strengthens, and a sizeable middle-class struggles for economic and social security, millions are still left behind in rural areas with little infra-structure.

Social and economic development is hindered by recurring floods and disastrous storms. Poverty prevents most people from protecting themselves or repairing the damage from natural disasters.

The situation of people with disabilities in Bangladesh is particularly hard. It is estimated that 10% of all children born in Bangladesh have some disability, many caused by poor pre-natal nutrition and birth complications. Because of poverty, lack of medical care and neglect, many children with disabilities do not survive into adulthood. For those who do, life is very hard. People with disabilities are usually viewed as a burden, unable to contribute to the family. Attending school is not an option as there are no special classes allocated for people with disabilities.

You are a part of a local organization who is willing to work with a
Northern partner to improve this situation. What do you do?

OPTIONS:

1. Nothing - the situation is hopeless.

2. Work with a local construction company to build an institution where these people can be cared for.

3. Train a group of people who will work with the individual families to provide training to families to take care of the people with disabilities.
