LANDMINES ARE A DEVELOPMENT ISSUE

Mines prevent the cultivation of fertile land areas. When people cannot grow their own food to feed themselves and their children, malnutrition, hunger, and even starvation rear their ugly heads.

To fetch clean water and the firewood to boil it and cook nutritious food becomes a literal "Dance with Death" for the women and children. To go to school, to sell one's produce, to travel to a doctor - all travel activities, however essential, become dangerous, difficult and sometimes impossible.
LANDMINES ARE A MAJOR HEALTH ISSUE

Without clean water, bacterial diarrhea, amoebiasis, and other diseases are rampant. Latrines cannot be built on land that is mined, or that is even thought to be mined. As a result, the human waste accumulates, contaminating the area and spreading disease.

And because land mine injuries are usually critical, blood transfusions are often a necessity. With limited medical resources and a dying patient, the first priority is to perform the transfusion. As a result, unscreened blood containing malaria or even the HIV virus is used. Blood transmitted diseases are free to roam and infect men, women and children, adding one more wild card in their precarious future.
