What is Development?

Development is a long-term process promoting community involvement in designing strategies to correct and improve chronic and structural problems in all areas of individual and community life. It is not relief and rehabilitation. Relief and Rehabilitation projects are those undertaken to respond to situation following natural or man-made disasters. They supply basic life support requirements of food, water, shelter and medical supplies.

Development increases production for local consumption, processes raw materials locally and utilizes technology appropriate to the local resources. The local community must be involved in all facets of the planning, implementation and evaluation of the project. As well, the communities must contribute people and/or supplies and act as a partner in the project.
