Nicaragua    CASE STUDY #1

OPTION 3
3. Clearly there is no way for the farmers of this region to make a reasonable living. Therefore an organization will help arrange to move all of the families from this community to Managua, the capital city, where there are bound to be more opportunities.

While relocating the families might, at first glance, appear to be a viable solution, there are definite drawbacks. While there may indeed be more opportunities for jobs in the city, there are also more people competing for those same jobs. Farmers, while having a vast amount of skills relating to farming are unlikely to have the skills required to work at the jobs available in the city.

Without friends and/or family in the city, the farm families will have no where to stay. They will have moved from their familiar culture, from a place where they can use the skills they have to raise food for their family, to an over-crowded city where they will not have a place to live, the land to raise food or the ability to find employment to feed their families.
